History
Long, long ago the Droevendaalsesteeg was a sandy path from the Peppeld, a neighbourhood ("buurtschap") along the (still existing) Wildekamp road. Farm buildings where located at the Peppeld, the path was the connection ("schaapsdrift") to the lower, wet grazing fields in the Binnenveld for the sheep.
In 1977, 24 barracks where build on a field along the Droevendaalsesteeg, because of a shortage of student housing. There where meant to last for about 15 years. In 1982, 11/15 more barracks where added.
The barracks were meant to last for 15 years. But in these years, a special kind of community had evolved, including vegetable gardens, campfires, goats, chickens, piglets and cats, but mostly a special feeling to live on Droevendaal.
The inhabitants were determined to keep this Droevendaal, and after years of discussion with the owner SSHW (nowadays Idealis), environmental groups and the community of Wageningen, in 1997 the decision was taken to rebuild Droevendaal.
In 2000 we saw the result: another idea of 'barracks', build by environmentally friendly standards. Rainwater is used for the toilet and the washing machine, solar energy for warm water. Also special things were arranged for the inhabitants: it is until now one of the few Idealis complexes were a corridor can decide (up to a certain degree) who will come to live with them, and a part of the maintenance of the area itself is also done by the inhabitants.
